Structural Inspection - Bridge

SAI was responsible for structural inspection, analysis, and BMS system upgrades for the Port Authority of Allegheny County, PA. The project consisted of various structure types including steel arch, concrete arch, through truss, timber beam, concrete box beam, and other steel and concrete designs ranging from 15' - 5,000' in length over waterways, railroads, and roadways.

Physical Features: 
  • Centre Avenue Bridge - 223' three-span continuous steel plate girder bridge over East Busway and CONRAIL Mainline (Example).
  • Fort Couch Road Bridge - 174' three-span welded through-plate girder rail bridge over Fort Couch Road (Example).
  • Panhandle Rail Bridge and Approach Structures - two 163' three-span camel-back through-truss main river crossing and 14 approach spans consisting of two through-girder spans, two-deck truss spans, and 10 deck-girder spans over several city streets, a state highway, two railroads, and the Monongahela River (Example).
Other Features: 
  • Provided continual maintenance to the program updated for BMS revisions and to meet the needs of PAT as well as added new inspection findings .
  • NBIS inspection of 74 bridges owned by PAT or that cross their right-of-way.
  • Various structure types including steel arch, concrete arch, through truss, timber beam, concrete box beam, continuous steel plate girder, and other steel and concrete designs.
  • Fifteen structures with timber decks and one with timber abutments.
  • Performed and/or checked structural analysis for each bridge.
  • Coordination of traffic control with railroads including CONRAIL, Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad, CSX, and P&LE Railroad.
