Department:
Construction Inspection

SAI was responsible for the construction inspection of a major bridge over Monongahela River that consists of four spans: one steel girder approach span, a haunched Parker Truss over the main channel, and a two-span continuous steel girder approach. The new bridge was constructed just upstream from the old bridge that remained open during construction. No detour was required.

Physical Features:
  • 746' four-span (one steel girder approach span, a haunched Parker Truss over the main channel, and a two-span continuous steel girder approach span) major river crossing bridge over the Monongahela River.
  • 1550' approximate total length of the project including roadway approach.
Other Features:
  • Typical bridge section is two 11' lanes with 3'-6" shoulders and a 10' sidewalk.
  • A key construction constraint is the required temporary horizontal navigation clearance of 300 feet during construction due to the close proximity to an upstream lock and dam.
