Structure Design

SAI was responsible for the overall structure design of the Zurn Viaduct and the relocation of affected railroad tracks.

Physical Features: 
  • 1125' eight-span steel beam bridge over CSX New York to Chicago mainline track, and Zurn Industries property.
  • 2800' relocated Allegheny Eastern Railroad mainline track.
  • 3900' CSX Railroad Yard track relocation.
  • 4000' private rail yard track relocation.
Other Features: 
  • Aesthetic treatments for median barrier, parapets, piers, abutments, and wingwalls.
  • Mechanically stabilized wingwalls.
  • Weathering steel girders.
  • HPS - Grade 70 steel.
  • Bridge includes automatic anti-icing system.
  • Three historical plaques dedicated to former steam engine industry located on site.
  • Coordination with private industry to locate substructure to maintain access to enable continuous business operations throughout construction.
  • 100-year-old 90" concrete pipe carrying Garrison Run replaced to support railroad relocation.
  • Maintained railroad traffic during construction.
  • 2006 American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania (ACEC/PA) Diamond Award Winner.
