Thursday, June 18, 2020, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – SAI Consulting Engineers, Inc. was selected by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission to provide preliminary and final design services for the widening and redecking of PTC Mainline Bridge No. NB-647 at MP A110.0 on the Northeast Extension near Wilkes-Barre. The existing three span steel girder bridge is 337 feet long and carries the Turnpike high over Mill Creek and Bald Mountain Road (SR 2036) in Bear Creek Township, Luzerne County. This project entails bridge and roadway reconstruction to accommodate a widened Turnpike section through the corridor, and will be constructed utilizing half-width construction. The bridge is set in the middle of a 1,910-foot radius curve and we will consider both symmetrical and asymmetrical widening options during preliminary design. The project will include structure redecking and addition of new girder lines and substructures; and significant roadway, drainage, stormwater management and E&S work. Design work will be completed by staff from both the Harrisburg & Philadelphia Offices. Mark Bonner will be the Project Manager, Colin Drager will lead the structure design and Greg Soule will lead the highway design and PS&E efforts. Our subconsultants will be Gibson-Thomas Engineering, Susquehanna Civil and Lotus. This is a great project for the SAI team with an estimated construction cost of $15M and agreement amount of $4M!
